(Strugatsky Brothers website) NOTES This is a crime / mystery thriller with surreal and psychedelic science fiction overtones based on a book Inspector Glebsky's Puzzle by the Strugatsky brothers. The screenplay was also written by the brothers and it differs from the book. The less you know about the movie the better starting point you have. The film is based largely on the mystery of what's happening to the people of Dead Mountaineer's Hotel. Is everything what it seems? Who's dead or who's not?。1945年，游学归来的刑侦专家程慈航，在码头遭遇险情，多方势力为争夺一只铁箱大开杀戒。这只铁箱里，存放着日军细菌武器的绝密档案。警察厅厅长莫采石将铁箱存放在档案馆密室内。由于内奸刘阿常的出卖，档案被盗，案情从此扑朔迷离。程慈航获悉此案事关日军细菌武器，向“叔叔”莫采石请战，总署刑侦警察局局长霍然随即特聘程慈航为布衣侦探。。。。在濑户内海近海边荒岛上住着一对农民夫妇，他们有两个天真可爱的孩子。小孩非常听话，一起帮着料理家务。岛上严重缺水，周围都是咸水，一滴也不能用。因此，夫妇俩每天要从对岸运来饮用水，浇灌庄稼的水。每天拂晓就得起床，到对岸把水一担担的装上船，再浇灌到地里。但是庄稼长得不好。年复一年，他们开拓了一片又一片荒地。有时孩子们到海边钓到鱼都舍不得吃，都拿到集市上卖掉，换点钱吃顿好饭。一天，大儿子得了疾病，等夫妇俩从对岸赶回来，有驾船到对岸请来医生时，孩子早已断气了。夫妇俩怀着悲痛的心情火化了儿子，痛苦使他们更加痛苦沉默了，然而他们还是这样年复一年继续过这样的生活。。
