Dao returns home and finds her fiance in bed with another woman. She shoots them dead on the spot. She is sentenced to 10 years in prison. She gets out eventually and stays with a friend who runs an escort service and learns that women are even caged in the outside world.。一九四九年的上海正是多事之秋，靳康年(邓浩光)与董敏(翁虹)邂逅而坠入爱河，但几经波折才再度重逢，誓言决不分离。可惜康不久被对他有心病的靳子轩(陈锦鸿)迫害，被屈入狱。当康获释时，康、敏仿似隔世重逢。一次难得机会，敏可到美国深造音乐，康为了不想拖累敏，嘱敏先往美国等之，而自己却赴外地从军。不久敏获悉事实，便回国找康，惜不果。数年后，康突然出现，并被卷入文化大革命浪潮中，遂掀起一场激烈的恩怨情仇。。
