在世界级画家田村修三（石坂饰）的展览会上发生了一件大事。发现其中一幅展示作品是赝品。画这幅画的到底是谁？连日来，报道不断升温，北海道小樽发现一具女尸。在这两起事件之间出现的男人。他就是曾经被称为新锐天才画家，却因为某个事件而从人们面前消失的津山龙次（本木饰）。 曾经的龙次的恋人，现在田村的妻子·安奈（小泉饰）前往小樽。原以为再也不会见面的龙次与安奈重逢，长年侍奉龙次的神秘人费克塞·水肯（中井饰），追查伪作事件的美术鉴定权威·清家（仲村饰）、全身刺青的女人·牡丹（清水饰）、仰慕龙次的调酒师·蓟（菅野饰）…每个剧情都与不断追求“真正的美”的龙次的想法交织在一起。当他的画笔动起来的时候，紧张的剧情、深邃的爱情、痛切的人性就会呈现在画布和银幕上。。In this bitingly satirical film Peter Slovan, a continuous source of trouble for the film functionaries of the socialist Slovakia, tackles an evergreen topic – the corruptive effects of power. Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power.
