西北地区秦岭深处，禾禾（杜源 饰）是个见过世面的复员军人，他想通过辛勤的劳动改变自己和家人的生活状况，但倒霉的他烧窑窑塌、养鱼鱼死。媳妇秋绒（徐守莉 饰）不满意他的折腾跟他离了婚，带着未满周岁的儿子栓栓单独过。同村的灰灰（辛明 饰）是个满足于衣食温饱的庄稼人，他不相信农民不种地也能富裕起来。但他媳妇桂兰（岳红 饰）可不这么想，她希望眼前的苦日子能有所改变，这一切源于复员的禾禾对外面世界的描述。为了改变生活现状，禾禾卖过豆腐养过柞蚕但都无功而返，然后在县科协的帮助下，又养起了鼯鼠。这时，灰灰和桂兰之间的“战争”已经发展到了白热化......。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。特装版には単行本6巻に収録された「社員旅行回」を収めたOADが付属する。
